Way back in 2004, Omni entered Bristol based short film event ‘The Joy of 8’: a celebration of the restraints of shooting on the Super 8mm film format.
The condition being that each contributing filmmaker shoots a fifty foot / 3 minute cartridge, edited sequentially in camera that could be screened alongside a separate audio soundtrack as a coherent film on the big night. A very nerve wracking prospect indeed.
The ingredients that Omni poured into their ‘Dog Years’ mix was: a script written on a long car journey to Scotland, a half day shoot in Clevedon with our accountant and his dog, the voice of our storyboard artist, a guitar ditty provided by a mate and with some added luck for good measure we created a little gem that won over its audiences, travelled the world and picked up numerous awards.
Its most recent and ultimate achievement however was to be acknowledged as a short film of note by the BFI for their history of British cinema web resource ‘Screen Online’ alongside the early works of Ridley Scott, Shane Meadows and Simon Beaufoy….which is nice.
